Apple is going further in the advertising business. Soon, a paid ad will be added to the Today tab of the App Store. And a payment link will be added to the product pages for individual applications.
These will join search ads that are already included in the App Store.
Apple acting as an ad broker is likely to be controversial as the company has taken a tougher stance on targeted ads provided by Google, Facebook and others.
More ads running in the App Store
Open the App Store and you will be taken to the Today tab. It was added as part of a major redesign in iOS 11. Until now, it’s been a way for Apple to point users to applications that are new, popular, updated, or outstanding in some way.
Going forward, developers will be able to pay to have their products on the Today screen. They will be clearly visible in the section labeled as Advertisement.
The spot will not include advertisements for Coca-Cola or Toyota. “They will only contain the content of approved App Store product pages of apps,” Apple said in its announcement on Friday.
Additionally, developers will be able to place links to their applications on the product pages of other apps. The link will be added to the “You May Also Like” section of the page, and labeled as an ad. Devs will not be able to choose specific applications on which to place the link, but only categories of applications.
There are already Apple Search Ads in the App Store. Developers can pay for their application to appear when a user performs a search.
apple and ad
It’s easy to get confused about Apple’s attitude towards advertising. On one hand, it tells developers, “At Apple, we believe that advertising can play a positive role for both businesses and people.”
But it also created app tracking transparency, which lets iPhone/iPad users decide whether third-party apps can track them to provide targeted advertising. For example, ATT has so far cost meta billions in advertising revenue.
App Store ads are also targeted ads. Apple promises that they adhere to “rigorous privacy standards,” but privacy experts have complained because ATT cannot be used to prevent Apple from creating profiles and providing targeted advertising on its users.
To opt out of targeted ads on iOS or iPadOS, go here Adjustment , Privacy & Security , apple ad then toggle personalized advertising, you can also tap View ad targeting information To see how Apple is targeting you with ads.
To do this on Mac, go to system Preferences , security and privacy , privacy, select the privacy tab and then select apple ad in the sidebar.
Deactivating personalized ads does not mean that ads will disappear from the App Store. According to Apple, “Turning off personalized ads will limit Apple’s ability to serve you contextual ads, but will not reduce the number of ads you receive.”
