For some time now PlayStation has decided to broaden its horizons by opening up the possibility of publishing their games on Personal computer taking advantage of digital stores such as Steam and Epic Games Store, with which a strong partnership is underway. Today Sony takes another step towards this new path with the release on PC of Marvel’s Spider-Mantitle developed by Insomniac Games initially for PlayStation 4 and later re-released in a full version of DLC and improved for PS5 and, now, also on PC.
Be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man
The title immediately catapults us into the shoes of a Spider-Man already accustomed to life since superhero but with a poor balance between hero and Peter Parker, his house is always messy, he’s always late for work, and things with MJ aren’t exactly great. Even as the superhero things start to go downhill after arresting Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpinone of New York’s greatest crime lords, a new threat of seemingly mystical origin looms over the city.
The narrative component of the game manages to hit the mark thanks to a balance dictated by well-written dialogues and well-made cutscenes, on balance this is the best Spider-Man storyline ever designed for a video game. The longevity, which is around 20 hours, is well thought out, never ending in that typical feeling of boredom usually noticeable towards the end of an adventure. Some twists will make you excited, others angry, but we are convinced that you will still be extremely satisfied with this new “journey” by Peter Parker.
A huge city, full of things to do
In addition to the main story, the game offers a huge amount of side activities, such as stopping petty crimes around the city, various criminal operations bases that act as arenas to fight off waves of enemies and of course tons of collectibles. Each activity will reward us with tokens that we can spend to unlock new costumes and gadgets to help Spidey fight crime. There is also a tiered system and skill trees that will make the combat system, which takes full inspiration from the Batman from Rocksteadymore and more fun.
In the long run, the collectibles may be too redundant, but Insomniac has thought of them well (apart from the useless pigeon race), consequently we are convinced that you will also be able to appreciate the various secondary activities that the software house has thought for you during the development.
Captured from PC
Marvel’s Spider-Man is technically superb
As for the gameplay side there is little that has not already been said in our original Marvel’s Spider-Man review, it is possible to play using a mouse and keyboard but it is strongly recommended to use a controller remembering that using an original DualSense it will be possible to take advantage of its exclusive features such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. We tested the title on a mid-to-high-end PC consisting of an AMD CPU Ryzen 7 3700X at 3.59GHz, 16GB of RAM Corsair Dominator Platinum at 3600MHz and an Nvidia RTX GPU 3070Tiwe wanted to dare with the graphics settings to test the level of optimization of the title and, despite the reflections Ray Tracing active, the game is particularly fluid both during the exploration of the city and during the story and combat cutscenes remaining quietly above the 60FPS.
The graphics settings used during the game
We noticed some small burrs that had already been promptly reported to us by the Sony team with the reassurance that most of the problems will be solved before launch, some small imperfections during the cutscenes with jumps in the audio tracks and small freezes at the beginning and at the end of the scenes but nothing that cannot be fixed with a small patch. On the positive side, the game still offers a framerate unlocked, support ai widescreen and reflex management Ray Tracing And improved shadows compared to its console counterpart.
Note the Ray Tracing reflections also on the mask
One small note worth mentioning is the ability to play Marvel’s Spider-Man via Steam Deckthe new portable console by Valve which allows you to take your Steam library with you and continue the game where we left it thanks to cloud saves.
