Peter Parker’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe dates back Captain America: Civil War, when the Spider Child was summoned by a Tony Stark intent on stopping Cap before the situation escalated. Since that time, Toma Holland’s Peter Parker has faced several adventures in the franchise, the latest of which, Spider-Man: No Way Homand, it could be considered the moment of the actual birth of the Spider in the Marvel Cineamtic Universe. To date, however, the origins of Spider-Man’s powers within the MCU have not been toldan absence that it was hoped would be filled by Spider-Man: Freshman Year, animated series dedicated to the character. However, at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, it was expressly stated by Marvel Studios that we will not use the Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story in Spider-Man: Freshman Year .
Sony’s Spider rights don’t allow Spider-Man: Freshman Year to use Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story
Not only does this revelation clarify how we will once again not see the origins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider powers, but one even wonders if the Parker of Spider-Man: Freshman Year is the same as we saw in the cinema, or if the multiverse will make itself heard again. In the images shown by Marvel Studios at San Diego Comic-con, infati, the famous scene of Captain America: Civil War in which May (Marisa Tomei) welcomes Peter into the house while talking to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has been faithfully reconstructed, except for one detail: the billionaire on the sofa is not Stark, but Norman Osborn.
From what has been seen in Spider-Man: No Way Homand, we have discovered that there is no Oscorp on Earth-616, which leads us to wonder if Spider-Man: Freshman Year is part of the continuity of the franchise. At the California convention, no trailers were presented, but only images, in which other famous names from the Marvel Universe appeared, such as Amadeus Cho, Nico Munro and even Daredevil. Of names related to the Spider of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Ned or MJ, not even the shadow. How come? Once again the age-old question of rights enters the scene.
Despite having appeared in several films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man is still in Sony’s hands, who owns the character rights to figures close to him, such as Venom. The management of the rights of the Spider, in all honesty, is more complex than the multiverse: apparently, after the renegotiation of the sharing of the figure of the Arrampicamuri between Marvel Studios and Sony, the rights of the latter on the Spider have been limited. Sony would therefore have pre-emption on all of Parker’s live-action appearances, on the small and large screen, on the animated film cycle that began with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and in all animated productions we have episodes lasting 44 minutes or longer. Reason why they are in the Disney + catalog The Spectacular Spider-Man And Ultimate Spider-Man.
Given all these details, at the moment it becomes difficult to understand if Spider-Man: Freshman Year the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be linked, but unless you find a loophole within that fantastic deus ex machina known as the multiverse, it seems difficult that the Parker of the animated series can be inserted in the continuity of the franchise.
