Many cultures have this particular game where you aim and launch stones to get as close to the target as possible while trying to prevent your opponent’s stones from doing so. You may be familiar with bocce, lawn bowling or even curling, but in France, they call it petanque and an upcoming Google Doodle lets us play a game or two. Or, uh, twenty-three. Look, TikTok is not for me, okay?

I’ve had too much trouble with consistent throws on mobile doodles – requiring users to consider both their swipe force as well as the rest position of their finger. It’s very easy to go way too far, especially if you happen to have an unfortunate hook like me. One tip I have is to do a simple downward flick instead of fumbling around with the pad of your finger. But in any case, you’re much better off running the desktop version that lets you click the boulevard to sling it back and give it a true trajectory. There’s a singles and a couple mode, so if you and three friends are particularly annoying in your office or home cubicle, you’ll all want to give it a try. It will be available as long as the Doodle Blog is alive.
By the way, I mentioned curling up in the introduction and it turns out that Google also had an animated doodle – one from a series called “Snow Games” that ran during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea – In which a tortoise was about to slip itself and is pressing the button. Google also made a stylized doodle after RPG last year.
