In recent days, the release of the Joker sequel, entitled Folie À Deux. Joaquin Phonex will be back on board the project again in the role of Batman’s famous nemesis, this time flanked by an exceptional new entry, or Lady Gaga. We still don’t know what her role will be (many speculate Harley Quinn), but some details have emerged about the setting of the new film.
The Joker sequel will be set in Arkham Asylum
According to the rumors of the American portal The Wrap, The Joker sequel will be set largely within Arkham Asylum, one of the most important locations in the DC Comics universe. This is an asylum that serves as a psychiatric hospital for Gotham criminals. A revisited version of the Asylum called Arkham State Hospital also appeared in the first film where Arthur Fleck is intent on stealing the medical artifact of his ailing mother and then in the finale.
The use of Arkham Asylum could support the hypothesis that Lady Gaga will play Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist who in the comics falls in love with Joker following her criminal career and becoming Harley Quinn. There is currently only one Harley Quinn in the DCEU, that is Margot Robbie, but this new version will have no connection with other DC projects. Both Joker and The Batman, in fact, are set in an alternative universe outside the continuity, as explained several times by Warner.
Joker, released in 2019was originally intended as a stand-alone project, but the huge box-office success convinced Warner to give the green light to a sequel. It was the highest-grossing Rated R film ever (over 1 billion dollars). But that’s not all, because Joker received 11 Oscar nominations, taking home two: best actor for Joaquin Phoenix and best original score for Hildur Guðnadóttir.
